HEAIDS salutes true friend and champion, Professor Russel Botman

The Higher Education & Training HIV/AIDS Programme (HEAIDS) celebrates the life and legacy of Professor Russel Botman, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Stellenbosch, following his passing on 27 June 2014.

HEAIDS Director Dr Ramneek Ahluwalia and the entire programme thank Professor Botman for his invaluable contribution to the programme's success. We remember him as a man with a passion for strengthening social cohesion. Professor Botman urged us to help our young people live longer and healthier, and to contribute to the wellbeing of our communities and nation.

He firmly supported HEAIDS in its endeavours to prevent new infections, to make health-seeking and healthcare delivery within the higher education and training sector more robust, and to mobilise the sector to work as one to address HIV/AIDS.

Professor Botman was our champion and we knew we could count on him to stand behind our efforts. We will miss his presence and energy, and wish that many new South African heroes follow in Professor Botman's footsteps.
